DVD-R or a Digital Versatile Disk Recorder is a device that records your favourite TV shows on to a DVD disk similar to the way you can record TV programs onto A VHS video cassette tape. A DVD-R allows you to perform all the same functions as a video recorder but with some great added benefits.

Recording quality on a DVD-R recorder is much higher than with a VHS video recorder. Unlike VHS tapes, DVDs do not degrade over time. If you don't record many TV shows then a basic DVD-R recorder should serve you well, if you think you are going to be recording a couple of show per week then you should consider the long term benefits of spending a little more money up front on a re-usable DVD system like DVD-RW or DVD-HD.
