DVD-R or a Digital Versatile Disk Recorder is a device that records your favourite TV shows on to a DVD disk similar to the way you can record TV programs onto A VHS video cassette tape. A DVD-R allows you to perform all the same functions as a video recorder but with some great added benefits.
Recording quality on a DVD-R recorder is much higher than with a VHS video recorder. Unlike VHS tapes, DVDs do not degrade over time. Typically, you'll get about 60 minutes of recording on a single DVD disc using the best-quality mode. You can choose a lower picture quality setting to give yourself more recording time and this lower setting will still be of higher quality than a VHS system. It will also double the DVD Disk recording time to approximately 120 minutes, enough space to record most shows and movies.
The down side of basic DVD-R recorders is that you can only record onto a DVD disk once. If you're someone who records lots of TV shows then the cost of continually purchasing blank DVD disks could add up over time. On the plus side many DVD-R models are retailing for less than £100 which is about the same cost as a standard DVD player. DVD-Rs still play normal DVD movies like the ones you rent from Blockbuster or purchase online from Amazon.
If you don't record many TV shows then a basic DVD-R recorder should serve you well, if you think you are going to be recording a couple of show per week then you should consider the long term benefits of spending a little more money up front on a re-usable DVD system like DVD-RW or DVD-HD.
DVD-RW allows multiple recordings on to a single disk. You can also buy DVD-HD the HD stands for Hard Disk similar to the Hard Disk in your PC. These combination DVD players with Hard Disk are becoming very popular as they offer greater recording options and flexibility. You can read more about them here.
The prices of DVD-Rs are dropping all the time as the technology becomes more popular. Simple DVD-R recorders can now be purchased from just £100, DVD-RW and DVD-HD are more expensive but they offer greater flexibility.
