DVD RW stands for Rewritable DVD recorder, The difference between a DVD-RW and a DVD-R is that you can use the disks in the DVD-RW more than once. There are many formats of DVD RW recorders. The crucial difference among the formats is the standards each manufacturer adheres to. Just like the difference between the old VHS/Beta tape when Video recorders first hit the high street, different manufacturers support different standards.
The DVD+RW format is supported by Philips, Sony, Dell, Ricoh and others. DVDs created by a +R/+RW device can be read by most commercial DVD players. Many DVD RW recorders now allow you to choose between different formats when you select a TV show or movie to record. Formatting becomes an issue if you want to share your recorded DVD disk with a friend who may not own a DVD player which can read your style of formatting.
You may also come across DVD-R DL or Dual layer technology as it is also known. As the name suggests, DL technology provides two recordable layers on a single-sided DVD disc. Dual Layer is more commonly called Double Layer in the consumer market, and can be seen written as DVD+R DL or DVD-R DL.
The latest format to hit the market is 'Blu-ray' a Blu Ray disk uses blue-violet laser technology, in contrast to the red laser technology used in traditional DVD formats. The rewritable Blu-ray disc can hold up to 25 GB of data on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. On a 50GB disc, this translates to 23 hours of recording time. The Blu-ray format was developed by Sony and is supported by a number of manufactures. Like Beta-Max video cassettes, Blu Ray offers higher picture quality and larger recording capacity but ultimately consumers chose the lower cost VHS cassettes to be the standard for Video recorders. It remains unseen if Blu Ray will go the same way as Sonys BetaMax format did in the early 1980s.
