DVD HD are DVD recorders with a built in Hard Disk. The hard disk is similar to those found in home PCs. A DVD-HD offers larger recording capacity than you achieve with just a DVD-R machine and ultimately gives you greater recording flexibility.
The hard disk space will eventually run out if you never delete recorded shows from it so you should just use the Hard Disk to watch shows you don't want to permanently keep. Once watched you can delete them to free up disk space. Should you need to permanently record a movie or show you can transfer it from the hard disk to a DVD disk.
DVD-HD recorders are still fairly expensive compared to PVRs or stand alone Recorders and they can be complicated to use. At the moment DVD-HDs are not yet as sophisticated as PVRs. PVRs also use hard drive technology but recording is easier thanks to the EPG software installed on them.
DVD HDs do offer the most complete recording solution, they are more expensive than standard DVD-Rs and a little trickier to use than a video or PVR machine.
