PVR Recorders are the next generation in TV recording technology, easier to use than a video and more versatile than a DVD-R recorder. PVRs are set to become the standard in home TV recording.
PVRs use the same technology as SKY+ or TiVO but without the need for expensive subscriptions. PVRs use a hard drive, similar to one found in most PCs, to store recorded programmes. A standard 80 gig hard drive will record around 40 hours of TV. Most PVRs come with EPG software and it is this that sets most of the PVRs apart.
EPG or Electronic Programme Guide allows you to record TV via an on-screen schedule. You simply select the name of the TV show you wish to record and press one button to start recording, there are no disks or tapes to worry about, all the recording is handled via the hard disk.
With a PVR you can pause live tv, instantly rewind a live TV (excellent for sporting events) and set-up series links. If you like watching EastEnders you can series link it, this simply means that every time EastEnders is on the PVR box will record it for you automatically!
Most of the latest PVRs now come with 'FreeView' digital TV installed as standard. Recording quality is excellent and PVRs are very easy to use. The only drawback is that you can't store recorded programs on any removable disk such as DVD, CD or tape. This means you can't lend a friend the film you recorded last night or that favorite episode of Friends. Once you have viewed a recorded TV show you will need to delete from the hard disk to free up space to record other programs.
PVRs are relatively new technology and the prices for these boxes have just started to drop significantly. Good quality PVRs can be purchased for around £120 - £150. If you like the sound of PVRs but also want the portability of a DVD then you could buy an integrated PVR-DVD it's the best of both worlds! A hard disk and DVD Recorder, it's slightly more expensive than a PVR on it's own but it does have the added benefit of being able to make DVD disks of your recorded shows.
